Dynamic Name Service - how to set up and use. |
||||||
USING A DYNAMIC Domain Name Service (DNS)
A Dynamic DNS Service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_DNS) is used when your Internet Service Provider (ISP) does not provide you with a fixed IP address. Typically business class internet service has a fixed IP address whereas most home users will not have a fixed IP address. Also if your computer is not always in a fixed location (e.g. a laptop computer), and it needs to be accessed over the internet then a DNS service is for you.
Usage of a DNS provider can overcome the problem of a server assigned IP address on the internet. This is because the DNS service provides you with a IP name. This IP name, when used within a network or network connection references the DNS service for you current IP address. You would however need to keep your IP address at the DNS service up to date. You can get applications that check that your DNS service is up to date with your current Internet IP address and most routers and modem routers provide this functionality somewhere within the router’s set up pages.
Using DYNDNS.com as a Dynamic DNS service
DynDNS.com can provide you with a free Dynamic DNS Account. This is a service to track your dynamic IP address.
